The Project

Conflict management played a significant if not the most important role in early modern diplomacy. It illustrates the constant processes of mediation and negotiation, which included efforts but also reluctance, success but also failure. The research group directed by Dorothea Nolde is studying these processes in detail. Therefore, the members of the group are dedicating their endeavours to various sections, taking into account different agents as well as different geographical regions. For this purpose they are opening the field to include private as well as public spheres, official as well as informal participants, and European as well as Non-European players. Furthermore, they implement different theoretical approaches such as conflict management, ego-documents, the working couple, or hybridity in order to provide a deeper understanding of diplomatic processes.
